Become a Reading Mentor with The Shadow Project!

About

The Shadow Project is recruiting volunteers to become in-person Reading Mentors in Portland, Oregon schools. Mentors work one-on-one with students with learning challenges, motivating them to set and achieve weekly reading goals using assistive reading technology and an extensive audiobook library.

Reading Mentors volunteer in-person at one of our partner schools, and work one-on-one with students with learning challenges. Mentors motivate them to set and achieve weekly reading goals using assistive reading technology and an extensive audiobook library, called Learning Ally. Reading mentors are placed at one of our partner schools in Centennial School District (East Portland) and Cottonwood Elementary (SW Portland)

Requirements/Shifts

Volunteers (18+ years old) commit to 2-2.5 hours per week from October to May
Available for either the morning or afternoon shift during school hours, 9am – 3pm, depending on the school placement.
Provide proof of COVID vaccination

Minimum qualifications:

A love for reading and working with children ages 7 - 12

Accessibility information: Volunteers will be in schools, seated for most of the event, and there is no lifting involved.

Requirements

Wondering if you should register to volunteer? Based on the CDC guidelines, we are asking you the following questions:

Have you been exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19? See the CDC’s risk assessment guidance.
Do you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms can include a cough or shortness of breath or at least two of the following: Fever, Chills, Repeated shaking with chills, Muscle pain, Headache, Sore throat, New loss of taste or smell. See the CDC’s symptom information.

If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, we ask you not to register. We are doing all we can to align with best practices and keep our community healthy.
