Please register your CRN(s) no later than March 18th, if you are planning on utilizing a community-based learning assignment/project during the Spring 2022 term. Here are the steps to set up your CRN(s) for Community-Based Learning:
  • Step 1: Register your CRN(s) with the CBL Program
  • Step 2: If your CRN is approved, complete CBL Orientation for Faculty*
    *faculty who completed this for Fall 2021 & Winter 2022 term are not required to repeat the orientation

YES your students can do In person community engagement if you are teaching in person, online, remote, or hybrid! Please read the following to know what is required of you, as an instructor, and your students:

The Community-Based Learning Program will be supporting a limited number of instructors who choose to offer in person community engagement activities as part of a CBL assignment/project.

Instructors who would like to offer in person community engagement activities are required to coordinate with the CBL Program and their CRNs must follow the required risk management parameters and protocols:

  1. Any in person community engagement activities must be completed with organizations or community groups who agree to have a designated supervisor/verifier that will follow CBL’s Exposure Communication Protocols for COVID-19.
  2. Students must register with CBL and receive approval from the CBL Program prior to any in person activities.
  3. Students must report their activities by "Adding an Impact" using the GivePulse platform.

Mini Grant Opportunity
  • # of Mini Grants available: 2
  • Who is eligible: Faculty teaching a credit bearing course that has an optional or required CBL assignment/project.
  • Mini Grant Amount: $500 (Lump sum payment upon completion of requirements)
  • How to apply: When you register your course, you can indicate that you are interested in the mini grant opportunity. 
The CBL Program is seeking 1-2 faculty who can commit approximately 15 hours to integrate the use of GivePulse into their Spring 2022 course(s). Mini Grant recipients will be paired with a mentor and required to complete the following:
  • Orientation
  • 1-on-1 GivePulse Consultation
  • 30 min weekly check in for the first 3 weeks of the term
  • A minimum of 2 additional 30 min check ins throughout the term
  • Revision of syllabus and/or project/assignment to incorporate CBL processes/instructions for students
  • Provide constructive feedback to the CBL Program about the process

Project Plan

  • Provide basic information about your CRN(s) and the CBL assignment/project
    (You will have the option to upload your syllabus and/or your CBL project/assignment description)
  • Agree to CBL Instructor Expectations
  • Acknowledge CBL Learning Agreement Expectations of Student, Community Partner, and Instructor
If you are teaching multiple CRNs with a CBL assignment/project, you will be able to register all of the CRNs.
Instructors whose CRNs have been approved will receive a code to register for this orientation. 
If instructors are unable to attend the live training, they should still register and indicate they will need the recording to watch at their convenience.

This orientation will cover the following topics:
  1. Guidelines for Community Engagement & Community Partnerships
  2. COVID-19 Exposure Communication
  3. How to utilize GivePulse
    • Navigating the platform
    • Promoting specific Community Partners and opportunities to your course
    • Tracking & Reporting student community engagement with "Impacts"
  4. How to utilize the Online Learning Agreement
There will be time for Q&A. The training will be recorded for those faculty who are unable to attend.
