Shift NameAfternoon Breakout Session: Mutual Aid & Protest Support: Resilience for the Resistance
Description
There are many challenges involved with bringing tools for resiliency to the Movement. We will discuss a few key areas and brainstorm ways we can uproot systems of inequity to improve mutual aid, protest support, and community care:
  • Prioritizing the liberation of Black people in mutual aid and protest support
  • Navigating both explicit and internalized systems of oppression in order to bring tools for resilience to the people most impacted
  • Decentering white accomplices who often hold more power than the Black leaders they claim to support
  • Circumventing government structures steeped in white supremacy that both fail to provide crucial care and also prevent grassroots solutions from being implemented
  • Calling in harmful behavior through an Abolitionist lens

About Tamia Deary:
Tamia’s journey back to wellness without adequate resources after being diagnosed with breast cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder/response (PTSD/R) impressed upon me the importance of self-care and inspired me to improve access to care for my community by founding PDX Alliance for Self-Care. I believe in mutual aid and in building collective power to dismantle systems of oppression.
