About
Position: Congregate Meal Site volunteer at IRCO Africa House Senior Program
Program Area: Africa House Senior Services
Location: IRCO's Sokhom Tach Community Center (10323 NE Glisan St. Portland, OR 97220)
Schedule: Weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-1pm
Position Summary:
Senior Services programming is a bridge between our community's elders and mainstream society. The
congregate meal-site is a popular program and serves to diminish social isolation and encourage
independence. The elders who attend the program at IRCO's Africa House call the building their second
home. They come to socialize, eat culturally specific food, learn new skills, and access resources they
qualify for. This program is often a lifeline for our elders.
Volunteers will assist the case manager and program coordinator in serving the elders through meal
serving, simple kitchen tasks, and other program activities such as sewing, computer class, community
garden, and knitting. The most important traits for this position are empathy, kindness, and a willingness
to jump in and assist in big and small ways. This program serves a diverse group of elders from Africa, so
open-mindedness is key. Basic computer skills are useful but not necessary.
