Summary

Oregon Humanities connects people and communities through conversation, storytelling, and participatory programs to inspire understanding and collaborative change.

We are looking for a Program Assistant to join and support the evolving work of our Program Team and help us with projects that foster civic education and engagement. This role will focus on outreach and program development connecting to colleges and universities around the state. You can read more about our programs on our website. This role is for someone who is interested in the work of Oregon Humanities and public humanities broadly, enjoys working as a part of a team, and would like to both support existing programming and help develop and support new ideas. We’re looking for someone who can be flexible and responsive to the evolution of our programming needs, who enjoys taking initiative, balancing multiple tasks, and has great organizational and communication skills for both collaboration and independent work.

Responsibilities

Primary Projects and Activities:

  • Collaborate with our team to expand the Dear Stranger letter exchange program to colleges and universities statewide.
  • Collaboratively develop our Dear Stranger Live programming and events.
  • Develop and implement outreach plans to colleges and universities to promote Dear Stranger and our other programs.
  • Participate in team meetings and project meetings to work collaboratively for the delivery of public programs.

Other duties possible based on interest and availability:

  • Assisting with our in-person programming such as Consider This, Conversation Project, and Reflective Conversation Training.
  • Research and share innovative public humanities programming ideas with our Program Team.
  • Propose and implement programming as time and interests allow.

Learning Outcomes

Students will gain experience in:

  • program planning and implementation (goal setting, time management, documentation)
  • teamwork and collaboration (communication skills, negotiation)
  • outreach and marketing (contact cultivation, research, written communication, social media)
  • statewide networking

Qualifications

Required skills:

The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and attributes:
  • A strong interest in and commitment to the humanities and Oregon Humanities’ mission and programs
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including attention to detail, problem solving, discretion, and confidentiality
  • Familiarity with Google suite (gmail, google docs, google sheets, google calendar) and Zoom
  • Self-starter who assumes hands-on responsibility where necessary, and is able to balance competing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience or interest in interning in an organization where equity, community and imagination are valued
  • Adaptability to change due to the responsive nature of our programming and services

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with program planning and implementation.
  • Experience with outreach or marketing.

Additional Details

Work Schedule

  • Approximate Hours Per Week: 5-10
  • We can be flexible with work days and times with preference for Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 9AM-4PM.
  • Preferred Start Date - Flexible near 9/21/2026
  • End Date - Flexible near 6/13/2027

Compensation and/or Benefits:

  • $16.80/hr
